About Us

Serving the Dinkytown community for almost 30 years

Our Story

Ever since owner, Pat Weinberg, opened the first Purple Onion in Dinkytown on 14th St and 4th Ave in 1993, it has continually remained a beloved destination for delicious coffee and food, as well as a locus for local arts and culture.

Now located at 13th and University, the Purple Onion bridges a gap between the vibrance of the University of Minnesota campus and the bustling energy of Dinkytown.

Its uniquely cozy, yet vibrant energy make the P.O. a regular spot for many students, staff, and local workers. It is a home away from home for Pat and many others. The PO has seen relationships develop, graduations celebrated, conversations-good and bad, even a couple weddings of University alum who wanted their special day to be spent in the place their love grew.

So come in! We offer breakfast, lunch and an early dinner (see contact for kitchen hours) and if that doesn’t convince you then our Fairly Traded, Organic coffee selection will! Come study, come eat, come drink, just get here and you’ll see.

See you soon!
